The Gently Used Purse Sale began in 2006.

The Gently Used Purse Sale began in 2006 as a way to raise funds for the ministries of the Episcopal Church Women of St. Raphael Episcopal Church, Lexington KY. The concept is simple - collect the unused purses lurking in closets all over the city and turn them into dollars to spend doing good work in our community.

St. Raphael parishioner Diane Davis had led a small project at her office to help a friend in need. She and her co-workers gathered the spare purses from their closets that were still in good condition but of which they had grown tired. Diane cleaned them up a bit, displayed them with a bit of panache, and SHAZAM! Their co-workers bought those nearly-new purses for a good price, much less expensive than new, and the result was enough money to get her friend back on her feet.

If this worked in her office, Diane thought, why not do it on a larger scale at St. Raphael's and raise funds for our favorite ministries? Thus the St. Raphael ECW "Gently Used Purse Sale" was born.
